Some schools in the United States offer a variety of arts programs, while other schools may have mediocre to non-existent arts programs. Students in their early years of schooling from elementary to high school depending on whether he or she has an arts education can affect them in the long run. Art programs since the 1980s have integrated into public education, however the No Child Left Behind act has since put the arts in the decline. According to Americans, 93% of them agree the arts are vital to providing a well-rounded education for children and 86% agree that arts education encourages and assists in the improvement of a child s attitude toward school. Due to having reading and mathematics as the core way of assessing how much a school does and how much it receives in federal funding, schools focus more on reading and math over anything else including art. Deep budget cuts on the art education at the benefit of mathematics and reading has long-lasting effects on schools that do so. According to National Endowment for the Arts 2015 Annual Report, many state and local organizations depend on federal funding to sustain accessible arts programs throughout the country. With funding being limited, art has to be reduced as it s deemed unimportant. This paper will give a rough estimate of what someone may need in college and how much it will cost to get them. There will also be averages of college tuition and credit hour costs. College is an important aspect of life now that a degree is needed to get most jobs. There are many ways to decrease the prices of college and there are multiple ways to pay for college but college will still be expensive. There is an epidemic plaguing Americas youth. Its not AIDS, its not herpes, its not homicide, its all these and more. I became a victim of this epidemic. Everyone thought it could never happen to me, Not her. Shes too bright. But it was me, and there are others like me, too many in fact. I was always the girl in the corner whom you could cheat off of on tests, the one who would do your homework for you. I was one of those bright children who would make something of herself. I was supposed to be smart enough to know not to do bad things, but I would never live up to these expectations. I had very low self-esteem most of my life and with time this worked against me. I was teased and tormented in elementary school though no one knew it. I began taking pills prescribed by my physician for backaches which is how my dreadful start almost led to the end of my existence. At first I took the pills as prescribed, but as my life worsened, I took more. I soon found myself looking for anything and everything to take. Id emptied almost every bottle of medicine in my home without anyone ever noticing. My school work suffered. I was missing two to three days of school a week. My parents thought it was just another sickness I would recover from. Little did they know it would take near death for me to recover from this epidemic called suicide. I finally hit rock bottom in February, 1995. I was in school and hadnt eaten in days, but had taken nearly fifteen pills that morning. I made it to fifth period, lunch. I fell asleep at the table with my friends sitting by my side. The bell rang but I didnt wake up. The paramedics were called when no one could wake me. I was taken to the hospital, where I suffered several seizures. My heart was beating so quickly I could feel the blood rush throughout my body. I almost died that day not just physically. After I stabilized, they sent in a psychologist. They knew I had tried to commit suicide but they never said it to me or my family. I was taken out of school for the last four months of the year. I always thought I was nothing, I never knew my life had value and I never thought I would be loved. It took a lot of hard work, my family, and God to bring me back to life. I was one who survived this epidemic. Thousands of youth die each year from it. I am now an A student planning to go to college to become a doctor. Im making a lot of long-term plans now, which I couldnt do before. But I always keep one short-term plan: live each day to its fullest. I now know I am loved and I am valuable to this world. My life is precious to me and Im going to use it the way God intended me to. I urge all the victims who suffer from Americas epidemic to take this victims example and change your lives before its too late. The expression riddled with guilt is a good way to describe the main characters life, Amir, in the book The Kite Runner, written by Khaled Hosseini. The Kite Runner is a story about an Afghan boy, Amir, who has many hardships throughout his life as he grows from a boy living in war-torn Afghanistan, to a successful writer living in America. Amir experiences many events that caused him to carry a great amount of guilt throughout his life. So much guilt that it even turned him into an insomniac. Amir can trace his feelings of guilt back to the moment he was born since his mother died during childbirth and Amir thinks his father blamed him. Especially because it happened when Hassan was running after Amirs victory kite. What made this guilt feel so much worse was that Hassan had always been so good and loyal to him. Once, Hassan even defended Amir against the same boys who raped him by aiming his sling shot at them. All this made Amir feel like a coward and compared to Hassans bravery, he even felt jealous. One night he was tossing and turning and said to no one, I watched Hassan get raped. A part of me was hoping someone would wake up and hear so I wouldnt have to live with this lie anymore I was the monster That was the night I became an insomniac. (pg. 86) At that point even being around Hassan was a constant reminder of Amirs failures and that made him angry but feeling angry added even more guilt. In Amirs desperate attempt to get out from under feelings of crushing guilt, he planted his birthday present of a watch and some money under Hassans mattress and told Baba. I knocked on Babas door and told what I hoped would be the last in a long line of shameful lies. (pg. 104) But when Hassan replied yes to stealing, Amir flinched, like Id been slapped. My heart sank and I almost blurted out the truth. Then I understood: This was Hassans final sacrifice for me. (pg. 105) Amir said he loved Hassan in that moment, more than he ever loved anyone but he didnt tell the truth. He remained silent hoping that the stealing would get them fired and he could move on, forget, start with a clean slate be able to breathe again. (pg. 106) However, Baba forgave Hassan for stealing, to Amirs complete shock, but Ali insisted they leave anyway and that broke Babas heart. Amir does move on with his life but doesnt begin to forgive himself or let go of the load of guilt he carried until the story comes full circle with Amir getting the opportunity make things right by helping his brother Hassans son, his nephew. Theres a statement in the beginning that caught my attention, There is a way to be good again. (pg. 2) It is through all Amirs efforts to travel back to Afghanistan to save Hassans now orphaned child, Sohrab, bring him back to America and adopt him that Amir begins to let go of the guilt hes carried for so long. He sees that he can finally start to heal because remembering events from the past stopped hurting as much when he thought about them as they once did. Finally, Hassans son shows his first glimpse of being happy while flying kites at the end, when Amir asks, Do you want me to run that kite for you? He catches Sohrabs glimpse of a smile when he nods yes and said the same thing Hassan once told him, For you, a thousand times over. (pg. 371)
